Allie Renison on a smooth Brexit transition for business

23 Aug 2017

With the clock ticking closer to the March 2019 deadline for the UK and EU to negotiate an exit deal and no trade talks firmly yet it in sight, it is unlikely that a comprehensive free trade agreement to replace our EU membership will be reached by this date.

The Government should aim to ensure a smooth transition for businesses between leaving the European Union and establishing a new trade relationship with our European neighbours.

In a new paper Bridging the Brexit Gap, Allie Renison, the IoD’s Head of EU and Trade Policy, has outlined a range of options for interim measures, from extending the Article 50 deadline or prolonging the application of EU law, to taking up Norway-style membership of the European Economic Area and a series of transitional customs measures. As both the UK and EU fundamentally agree Brexit should not be a disruptive exercise, Allie encourages the Government to make transitional arrangements a coherent and  collective policy objective.
