Ken Olisa OBE, founder of technology merchant bank Restoration Partners and Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, has been appointed Deputy Chairman of the Institute of Directors. Olisa will work alongside the Chairman, Lady Barbara Judge and the in-coming Director General, Stephen Martin, in setting the IoD’s strategy. Lady Judge congratulated Olisa on his appointment:
“I am delighted that Ken has been elected by the Board to be Deputy Chairman. His wide-ranging success in business, teamed with his dedication to public service, make him the ideal embodiment of the IoD’s commitment to integrity and enterprise.
“This is a challenging but exciting time for the IoD. We have a vital role to play in supporting our members as they adjust to the implications of the Brexit vote, and in representing their views in the debate on the UK’s new relationship with the EU. At the same time, we cannot lose sight of the big shifts that are happening as technology reshapes the economy and entrepreneurialism booms in Britain. I look forward to working with Ken, the rest of the Board and the executive, as the IoD encourages and develops the next generation of business leaders.”
Ken Olisa said:
“I am deeply flattered to have been elected by my colleagues for this role. The IoD has a proud history of setting standards for directors and standing up for good businesses. Our members run companies that make a very positive contribution to communities across our country.
“Worryingly, the EU referendum campaign exposed public doubts about the role that business plays in our society. There is therefore much work to be done to rebuild public trust. We can only build a cohesive society if citizens believe that businesses are well-run in the interests of customers and staff and that bosses are fairly rewarded. To this end, I am very pleased to be leading the IoD’s Good Governance Initiative, which seeks to understand, measure and promote what matters in the effective oversight of companies.”
Olisa’s technology career spans over 30 years, beginning at IBM. In 1992, after twelve years as a senior executive at Wang Labs in the US and Europe, he founded Interregnum, a technology merchant bank. Olisa is currently Chairman of Restoration Partners, an independent, boutique technology merchant bank.
He is a Freeman of the City of London, Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, Chairman of Thames Reach (for which he received an OBE in 2010), Chairman of Shaw Trust, was an original member of Independent Parliamentary Standard Authority, and is currently a director of Thomson Reuters. In 2015, Olisa was appointed Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Greater London. Olisa has been a non-executive director at the IoD for three years.
