Responding to the announcement that the Chancellor and Transport Secretary have given the go-ahead for a £344 million expansion programme at London City Airport, James Sproule, Chief Economist at the Institute of Directors, said:
Today's green light for expansion at City Airport is a tangible measure from the Government showing that the UK is open for business. Trade thrives on good connections, and even though much business can be done via email or video-conferencing, there is still no substitute for meeting in person. More capacity at City Airport will be a particular shot in the arm for the City of London, which is still working out its place in the world after the Brexit vote.
We hope the Government follows up on this good beginning by making a swift decision on the larger issue of a new runway at Heathrow or Gatwick. The UK needs to increase airport capacity to make sure we have the links to both existing partners and developing markets that will drive economic growth in the long-term.
