Brexit - Press releases

Brexit must mean a more sensible approach to immigration

25 Aug 2016

A United Kingdom EU passportIn response to the latest migration figures, which show the level of net migration largely unchanged at 327,000 for the year to March 2016, Seamus Nevin, the Head of Employment and Skills Policy at the Institute of Directors, said:

“Today’s figures reinforce how dangerous it is to make impossible promises in politics. The consistent failure to meet an ill-advised net target has eroded public trust in government immigration policy, no doubt contributing to the feeling, expressed by many at the EU referendum, that politicians had lost control.

“Brexit offers an opportunity to reset immigration policy. In order for the UK economy to succeed outside the EU, the Government will need to ensure that employers are not prevented from accessing the international workers our economy needs.

“The Government should begin a comprehensive immigration review to work out how to meet the needs of the country. The IoD will be making the business case for the kind of immigration controls we believe would support our economy, works for British companies, and address public concerns.”
