We can finally say it’s nearly Christmas now! Tis the season of mince pies and mulled wine.
Before we say goodbye to 2018, I wanted let you know about few things that we have been up to in November, and what’s coming up in 2019.
Director of the Year Awards
We’ve had a fantastic number of applications already this year, amazing applicants who have done great things! To those who still haven’t applied, you still have some time to enter the awards to showcase your achievements and increase your profile in the region because we have extended the deadline to 17th December 2018, giving you an extra 10 days to apply. Please click here to see the categories and to apply.
Youth Leadership Passport
In November we launched a brand new project in partnership with Bolton CDP and Youth Charter, to encourage young potential leaders from Greater Manchester’s African diaspora.
The Passport programme will give the young people development opportunities and experiences that will help grow their confidence, give them key skills to advance their careers and, over time, support a thriving North West region. See all pictures here.
Claire Ebrey, Regional Director at IoD North West & Isle of Man added, ''We know that women are still under-represented in senior roles. Black and Minority Ethnic leaders are under-represented. Research from McKinsey shows that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 21 percent more likely to have higher than average financial returns, and those that have racial and ethnic diversity are 33 percent more likely. I see it as a key role for the IoD, as the organisation for leaders across all sectors, to do whatever we can to try to shift this balance and reap the rewards for our region''.
Any IoD members who wish to attend future events are very welcome, especially if they might wish to offer the young people paid work experience.
Brunch with the Directors of the Year
We had a wonderful brunch with our recent award winners at the Storyhouse in Chester. They candidly shared stories about their challenges, driving success and how winning the award made a difference to them. We then had a guided tour of the wonderful Storyhouse, which has successfully merged Chester’s traditional library with a modern, vibrant venue, bringing literature to new audiences. See all photos here.
Social Mobility seminar with Gary Neville
We also had a bit of celebrity moment, when Manchester United star Gary Neville joined us to discuss social mobility, and how we can help improve the lives of young people in the North West. See all photos here.
In Cumbria, in partnership with Rathbones, we discussed the Brand New World of work, and how social media and the new generation of workers will impact upon our businesses. See all photos here.
In Liverpool, in partnership with Tilney, we considered how to take control of our financial futures, which helped us plan for sale, succession, retirement and investing. See all photos here.
Our Christmas celebration took place at Albert Square’s Chop House. Claire Ebrey and Mike Blackburn summarised IoD North West’s 2019, reminding us of some memorable events from across the year, and the positive difference our network of leaders is making across the region.
We said goodbye to Manchester Chair Paul Battye, and welcomed Sharon Amesu into the role. Our Communication Marketing Assistant, Sumaiya Rudhmila will also be leaving us at Christmas to spend time travelling - we will introduce you to our new Comms person soon! See all photos here.
