Mental health in sport and physical activity: Toolkit from Mind

We’re all familiar with the old adage ‘healthy body, healthy mind’ but when the Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation was launched in 2015, its focus made clear that – as a sector in itself - the world of sport, physical activity and recreation can be fraught with stress and anxiety.

In a domain where monitoring, evaluation and competition are the norm, it is perhaps unsurprising that not every individual will thrive. With such a focus on physical performance, is it any wonder that emotional and mental health can sometimes rank further down the priority scale? Employers in this sector come in all shapes and sizes, including professional sports clubs, leisure trusts, national governing bodies, charities and small businesses and all stand to benefit from increased support in tackling mental health and well-being in the workplace.

With this in mind, IoD campaign partner Mind - in collaboration with the Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation - has released the following toolkit aimed at supporting the sector for whom ‘get up and go’ is an essential part of their daily routine.

Faye McGuinness, Head of Workplace Wellbeing Programmes (Strategy and Development) at Mind, had this to say about the toolkit:

This toolkit brings together carefully selected resources for employers across the sport and physical activity sector, wherever you are on your journey to support your employees’ mental health. It includes our guide, which breaks down how you can meet each of the Thriving at Work standards. This provides practical examples of what employers across the sector are doing in these areas, as well as helpful tools. We hope you find it useful.

Get access to the full Toolkit here.

For access to further advice relating to mental health at work, as well as additional sector toolkits, Mind’s Mental Health Gateway is a fantastic, free-to-use resource.
