Mental Health for Small Workplaces: new training toolkit from Mind

16 Apr 2019

Group of workers discuss ideas round a table in a relaxed office settingIn the IoD’s recent Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace survey, respondents told us that significantly more needs to be done in terms of mental health training provision, with as many as 60%* of people remarking that - largely due to a lack of information, as well as budget and timing constraints - no mental health training is currently offered to management within their organisations.

Small and medium organisations account for 99% of the businesses in the UK. But research shows that, when it comes to mental health, they often fall behind larger organisations. Looking specifically at SMEs, campaign partner and leading mental health charity Mind aims to address this with the release of their new Mental Health for Small Workplaces toolkit through the Mental Health at Work gateway.

Faye McGuinness, Head of Workplace Wellbeing Programmes (Strategy and Development), had this to say on the launch of the new initiative:

“We know that, as a small workplace, people are your most valuable asset. Paying attention to their mental health has never been more important and it’s easier than you think to get started. Mind has worked with the Federation of Small Businesses and with people in smaller workplaces across the UK, to create some free, quick online training to build your staff’s confidence in thinking and talking about mental health.

Accessing help and advice should be straightforward, but our research tells us that only 23% of employees working in small organisations felt comfortable disclosing poor mental health. We hope the Mental Health for Small Workplaces toolkit is a step in the right direction to everyone having access to better mental health. ”

As part of the toolkit, Mind have launched free online-based training consisting of three modules, each taking about 20 minutes to complete:

  • Building your awareness
  • Looking after yourself
  • Supporting each other

Each subject is explored through text, illustrations, interactive activities, videos from real employees and practical tips you can use straight away. If you’re an employer or manager, there is also a free PDF guide full of tips and advice on how to deploy Mental Health for Small Workplaces in your organisation.
