As this policy area has been much discussed in the UK in recent years, we feel there is limited value in further EU legislation.
The IoD welcomes this opportunity to respond to the European Commission (hereafter referred to as “the Commission”) initial consultation phase on possible EU action to address the challenges of work-life balance. Policy relating to employment law is of the highest interest to the IoD and its members. As a result we welcome the opportunity to participate in the current consultation exercise.
We will also be responding separately to the public consultation on the Commission’s proposed roadmap on work-life balance. As this specific policy area has been in focus at the UK level in recent years, with the IoD having responded in detail to the Government’s recent consultation, we broadly feel there is a very limited level of positive value-add that could come specifically from added EU legislation, but significant scope for added complexity and burdens on employers that would not necessarily result in a more inclusive labour market.
