IoD 99s spotlight on female founders for IWD 2018

08 Mar 2018

Women entrepreneurs talking at IWD 2017Being involved in setting up the IoD 99 is one of the things I am most proud of in my professional life. We have an amazing, diverse and inspiring network of over 2,500 founders from across the UK, running businesses in wide variety of sectors.

For this year's International Women's Day we thought it would be a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the awesome Female Founders we have within the community. We have therefore recorded seven short interviews below, with 99ers who run companies in sectors ranging from branding to food, and film to legal. Each of the founders talk about their motivation for setting up on their own, the journey they have had, and the advice they would give any other women who is thinking about taking the plunge.

That said, International Women's Day is not just about highlighting the inspiring stories of women who are doing truly amazing things across the public, private and third sectors. It is also about creating action throughout the other 364 days of the year.

In the last few months, campaigns like #MeToo have shone a light on issues around sexual harassment and lack of equality. They are helping to give a voice to those who were afraid of speaking out and we are already starting to see actionable change to ensure real inclusion and diversity, an example being the Inclusion Rider that was launched during the recent Oscars.

But, we cant let this momentum slow, I am a proud feminist and a strong believer in the role we can all play in championing true gender equality, so lets all step up to to plate and #PushForProgress.

Alex Mitchell, Chair of IoD 99

First up we had a chat with Hortense Julienne, Founder of Miss Nang Treats. Her business targets taste explorers and looks to drive creative within the boutique and luxury snack markets.

Next we interviewed Kavita Cooper, Founder of Novo-K, a company that is focused on smart procurement for charities, enabling them make an even bigger difference to the beneficiaries the charity supports.

Our third interviewee was Aarti Parmer, founder of AP Brand Communications, an agency focused on helping their clients awaken and rediscover their brand.

Suzy Kerton, was the fourth founder of the day. She heads up Anything Intl an accounting business and also the driving force behind The Allies, an initiative bringing women and men together to champion equality.

Our next interviewee was independent producer, Samira Musa who gave an inspiring insight into equality within the film and TV field, both in front and behind the camera.

Eleanor de Kanter, was our penultimate interview for International Women's Day. She founded Agensi, a strategy and innovation agency that brings together traditional strategic analysis with digital data to provide actionable insights.

Last but definitely not least, we met up with Belinda Naiken-Payne, Founder of Our General Counsel, a legal services company that has created an innovative way to support their clients.
