Drawing together MPs from across the political spectrum, Parliamentary Select Committees play an influential role in UK politics, scrutinising the Government’s actions.

As such, they provide a key avenue through which to communicate IoD members’ perspectives on key business issues. Over recent weeks, the policy team have made a number of appearances at these Committees, which have been summarised below.

Joe Fitzsimons, Senior Policy Advisor @ Education Committee

Led by Rob Halfon MP, the Education Select Committee is investigating Adult Skills and Lifelong Learning, an issue frequently raised by IoD members.

Joe explained the challenge many firms face around accessing flexible training opportunities, and raised the regional dimension to the issue. He later put forward a case for tax incentives for companies and individuals to invest in their development.

Joe Fitzsimons, Senior Policy Advisor @ Work and Pensions Committee

Joe highlighted the impact of the economic challenge on the vacancies, particularly affecting young people, who are often among the most-impacted during recessions. Raising concern that unemployment can lead to skills dwindling, Joe called for investment support for retraining, and help for firms to make use of accessible courses for employees.

Tej Parikh, Chief Economist @ Treasury Committee

‘The economic impact of coronavirus’ was the hefty topic for our Chief Economist at this marathon Treasury Committee appearance.

Tej warned that, according to our member surveys, the Jobs Support Scheme may not be enough to prevent a rise in unemployment, and recommended further action, such as reducing employment taxes.

The lack of support for small company owner-directors who take income in dividends was another key issue Tej flagged during the session.
