One of the more notable developments in corporate culture in recent times has been the increasing importance of wellness in the workplace. Numerous studies have shown that an atmosphere in which communication and support are central to corporate culture makes companies more attractive to potential employees, as well as more profitable.
That is especially true when it comes to mental health. Given that many of us spend so much time at work, and that 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem in any given year, surely it’s time for employers and those who work for them to work together to create healthier workplaces.
But mental health still carries not only a stigma but also a lot of misconceptions. For instance, many people mistakenly believe that those with mental health issues don’t recover from them yet studies have shown that a supportive environment – both at home and at work – can be instrumental in helping people to bounce back to good mental health.
Fostering the right type of atmosphere requires teamwork: from the top down, employees need to see that you are genuinely concerned for their welfare and that you mean what you say. There are many ways to achieve this, but these are three top tips for fostering a healthy work environment:
1. Foster open communication
Giving employees structured ways to air their thoughts, feelings and observations easily and regularly is a great way to keep the lines of communication open for anyone in need of help or support.
2. Demand accountability
Team members have to be aware of when they have met expectations, as well as when they have not.
3. Appreciate their efforts
Employees aren’t just in it for the money: they want to be appreciated for their work and effort. Make sure you recognise achievement and celebrate accomplishments.
