Chairman's update: June 2016

Lady Barbara Judge IoD chairmanI had the great pleasure this month to visit the IoD South Yorkshire Region to attend their inaugural Annual Dinner. Hosted in the glorious Cutlers Hall it was an excellent evening and I can see this becoming a firm fixture in the areas business calendar. It is a real pleasure to be able to travel the United Kingdom and meet our members at these splendid events. One of the highlights for me was the Sinatra impersonator with a performance that was worthy of Frank himself.

I was also fortunate to speak at a joint lunch being held by the IoD and Barclays, who are a key partner in the region. The venue, the Devonshire Arms, was nestled at the foot of the Yorkshire Dales and this provided a picturesque backdrop for an afternoon discussing diversity and inclusion. I look forward to visiting Yorkshire again soon.

As you know one of my three objectives for my Chairmanship is to try to give more members access to opportunities to serve on boards. So it is with delight that I am able to announce a new initiative on which the IoD has partnered with KPMG.

IoD members in the UK now have a unique opportunity to explore non-executive opportunities through a new online platform provided by KPMG. This platform enables companies and head-hunters to find talented and effective individuals who can make a real contribution on a board.

Connect On Board has been designed to help non-executive directors, both current and aspirant find roles, as well as aiding organisations who are looking for NED candidates.

Melanie Richards, Vice-Chair at KPMG, said: “Together with IoD, other supporting organisations and executive search firms we are working with, we want to promote a more inclusive approach to the recruitment of non-executive directors. We are keen to support the evolution of skills and capabilities around the boardroom table.”

IoD members in the UK are invited to register on Connect On Board, for consideration to be included. To join you need to submit a CV showing a solid foundation of executive roles, any prior board experience (UK and/or overseas), thorough awareness of corporate governance issues with which boards need to comply, and a deep business/sector understanding.
