IoD members recognise the importance of mental health but lack a strategy to successfully manage it

Policy Voice is a group of 3,000 that forms the bedrock of every report the IoD publishes, every government consultation it responds to, and every dialogue it enters into with ministers and civil servants.

It is is an online insight community allowing members to share their views on key business topics each month.

In June 2016, we set out to understand what those members knew about mental health in the workplace. Our survey related both to their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their colleagues.

We discovered that IoD members recognise the dangers of poor mental health, but are behind the curve when it comes to remedying the problem.

The key findings were as follows:

  • Though more than 80% believe good workplace mental health is important, fewer than one in seven IoD members (14%) have a formal mental health policy in their workplace
  • More than half (54%) of IoD members have been approached by staff complaining of poor mental health
  • Business impact includes poor quality of work and decision making, with higher staff turnover and workplace conflict also recognised as dangers
  • IoD members consider themselves to be in good mental health
