IoD announces new Director of Policy and Corporate Governance

The Institute of Directors today announces the appointment of Dr Roger Barker as Director of Policy and Corporate Governance.

Roger starts the role having been Head of Corporate Governance and Course Tutor at the Institute. Formerly an investment banker, he spent almost 15 years in equity research and senior management roles at UBS and Bank Vontobel, both in the UK and in Switzerland. More recently, he ran his own small business, Governomics, a corporate governance advisory firm, with clients including Royal Dutch Shell and the MoD.

With a doctorate in corporate governance from the University of Oxford, Roger previously taught politics at Merton College, later becoming an Honorary Associate at UCL’s Centre for Ethics and Law. He is also a visiting lecturer at Saïd Business School, Oxford, and at Cass Business School, London. Between 2015 and 2020, he served as a UK Member of the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels.

Roger is replacing Edwin Morgan, who leaves the IoD after more than ten years of service.

Jonathan Geldart, Director General of the Institute of Directors, said:

“Ed’s contribution to the IoD can hardly be overstated. In his ten years here, he’s seen a number of governments, but always been a steadfast advocate for our members and responsible business more widely. We wish Ed all the best for his future endeavours, and know he will remain a valued friend of the IoD.

“I’m delighted at Roger’s appointment as Director of Policy and Governance at a crucial time for government policy and public trust in business. Roger is respected across the board for his insight on corporate governance, and brings a wealth of experience engaging with directors across different sectors. Having also run his own small business, he combines this with a first-hand understanding of the practical challenges our members face.”
