Russell moved to the UK from South Africa. He is now MD of Quattro Telematics Ltd, which provides a ‘one stop shop’ for UK and European car fleets in the areas of vehicle telematics, security, and driver safety.
In starting his own business with Quattro Telematics, Russell had to be a jack-of-all-trades. He was not only involved with sales, installation, training and support but also had to make a great cup of tea!
Why did you decide to become a member of the IoD?
My brother recommended that I join because of the networking opportunities, but also because of its gravitas as a professional body. It was probably the smartest thing I did. Joining the IoD has helped me solve a number of problems!
How has IoD membership helped you and your business?
One of most obvious benefits is having access to the premises as a meeting place. I’ve used Pall Mall, as well as Belfast and Manchester. On one occasion we were meeting with a supplier based in Canada – the IoD premises in Pall Mall definitely ticked the right boxes for us and him.
Which IoD products or services have directly benefited you or your business?
Matt Roper (of the Buying Support Agency, providers of IoD Procurement Services) was fantastic and was our lifesaver. When we started I had to learn about UK requirements and legislation as well as having to find suppliers. Literally within two phone calls Matt had an understanding of what our business was and what we were looking for. The services we receive all the suppliers he recommended has been outstanding.
Have you recommend the products and services to other IoD members?
Yes, absolutely. If you are a member of the IoD and are not taking advantage of these services, you are missing out. It’s actually almost criminal. Being a member of the IoD saves a huge amount of money and time. We shopped around to see what else is out there, but never came across anything that is close not only in terms of price but standard of service as well.
Are there any tips you can give when it comes to starting a new business?
Do your homework. The information on the IoD website is very useful. Make sure your tax and business finance is in place. Also, use the IoD Advisory Service – although we had enough finance to get going, we wanted to take it to the next level and get advice to help us grow and develop our business.
