Ges Ray, IoD member

Susy Weitz

Director of Consumer Insight, Hunt Mackay

“The Advance network understands the needs of different types of Directors and supports the way they work and operate differently.”

What was the main challenge you experienced as a business leader before joining the IoD?

"Growing our network to ensure a constant pipeline of new contacts that lead to business and revenue – a challenge that most start-ups face. Suring up the pipeline to generate new revenue is and will continue to be our biggest challenge."

What have you found as a result of being an IoD member?

"We’ve grown in capability. The networking opportunities, intel and facilities provided have been invaluable while trying to grow our business. These resources are things that we use in order to action the decisions we need to take as business leaders."

How long have you been a member of the IoD?

"Hunt Mackay joined Advance in October 2016."

What is your favourite thing about being part of the IoD Advance community?

"When the community gets together there is a real chance to talk, swap war stories and network. The more we do this as businesses and directors, the better."

“The business world is changing and Advance is a sign that the IoD is changing with it.”

What are three other benefits you’ve enjoyed as a result of being a member?

"We haven’t used all of the benefits yet, simply because we haven’t needed to just yet. The benefits are the reason why we joined and make us feel comfortable with the membership. They are a bedrock of reassurance when you join and are very important in that respect. I feel confident that we will use the benefits as and when we need to."

How has the IoD changed for the better?

"The business world is changing and Advance is a sign that the IoD is changing with it. Advance, for me, is about nurturing those directors or businesses that are ready to grow. It’s a great way of meeting people and provides start-ups with a certain amount of caché and clout while still giving them the space to do what’s needed on their own. The Advance network understands the needs of different types of Directors and supports the way they work and operate differently."

What does being a business leader mean to you?

"Being a founder means nurturing, protecting, developing and pushing the entity – helping it to grow and mature as a business. Being the founder means owning the founding principles of course but being mindful the business will grow and change organically and so we have to be conscious of letting it do so and not placing expectations on it that limit the development"

What would you say to anyone considering becoming a member and would you recommend it?

"Do I recommend having membership to the IoD? Yes and actually it’s something that I already recommend to friends and colleagues a lot. The facilities available to you as a member are great and delightful to work in."

If you could give one piece of advice to fellow directors, what would it be and why?

“Play to your strengths in business. My business partner and I are very clear about our expertise and we bring different backgrounds and disciplines to focus on that sweet spot. People buy us because we’re experts at what we do rather than trying to provide too many services."
