Mobile Marketing Specialist, Marketing Tech
“As an Advance member I've been able to overcome the old challenges I used to face.”
What was the main challenge you experienced as a business leader before joining the IoD?
"My main challenges were getting access to information, I didn’t know where to start and who to go to for advice with regards to the fundamentals of setting up a business. Since joining I’ve used the research services and the legal and tax helpline. These were services which were readily available as a member which were really helpful."
What have you found as a result of being an IoD member?
"Running a business, there are always going to be challenges so whatever support you can get along the way will be helpful to you and your business. As an Advance member I’ve been able to overcome the old challenges I used to face. However, as the business grows I’ll need new advice and new information as I face different challenges."
How long have you been a member of the IoD?
"I am a founding member of the Advance network. Prior to that, I was an IoD member since 2013."
What is your favourite thing about being part of the IoD Advance community?
"My favourite thing about being an Advance member is getting to know the other members, it was a huge bonus. Prior to that I didn’t really have an opportunity to make connections – each face was different at every event. When I started I originally used 116 Pall Mall as a meeting place but that’s now evolved; I use it for networking, setting up meetings and accessing information or advice."
“You immediately get great benefits after joining the IoD – a great platform for start-ups.”
What are three other benefits you’ve enjoyed as a result of being a member?
"I’ve enjoyed using the premises, market research and tax and legal helpline. The research is especially great as the research team have access to great databases. Not many members use it but there’s a wealth of information you can access. You no longer need to go to the British Library to get access to that type of data when you’re a member."
“Running a business, there are always going to be challenges so whatever support you can get along the way will be helpful to you and your business.”
How has the IoD changed for the better?
"The IoD has changed a lot in the last couple of years. I’ve noticed that even outside of the Advance community there have been lots of other new initiatives taking place – like the IoD 99 networking, the IoD supporting more start-ups and of course the upcoming Digital Academy which I’m looking forward to."
What does being a business leader mean to you?
"Being a business leader is never boring! There are ups and downs of course, as you have with any career, but I enjoy the fact that I’m in control of my future and what I’m doing."
What would you say to anyone considering becoming a member and would you recommend it?
"I already recommend membership to the IoD! Recently, I received a bottle of wine as a thank you from the IoD referral scheme."
If you could give one piece of advice to fellow directors, what would it be and why?
“People join the IoD for various reasons however I think for any start-up it’s a great support. Being a member gives you access to a wealth of information as well as providing you with networking. You immediately get great benefits after joining the IoD – a great platform for start-ups."
