Heather Carr, IoD member

Heather Carr

Managing Director, Ten Minutes More Limited

“Being a member of IoD 99 has been hugely beneficial both to me personally and to the development of my businesses – I have definitely got my money’s worth and more!”

What was the main challenge you experienced as a business leader before joining the IoD?

"My main challenge was definitely finding clients and getting access to the right kind of businesses to kick start my business venture. One of the key products that I offer is high level voice coaching to Senior Business people with voice coaches from the Royal Shakespeare Company, however the kind of people that benefit from this training are not always easy to find!"

What have you found as a result of being an IoD member?

"Through Membership of IoD 99 and access to the excellent IoD staff in Belfast I have been able to make these valuable connections both at events and through personal recommendations."

How long have you been a member of the IoD?

"I’ve been a member of the IoD 99 network for almost 2 years."

What is your favourite thing about being part of the IoD 99 community?

"Connecting with other members of the community both at events and through the Facebook group. This has been invaluable for me in terms of contacts but also to feel part of a community of like minded individuals that are in the same situation as you and happy to help."

“The research service has been of huge benefit to me both in terms of general market knowledge but also for preparing a business plan for my new business venture.”

What are three other benefits you’ve enjoyed as a result of being a member?

"The Research Service has been of huge benefit to me both in terms of general market knowledge but also for preparing a business plan for my new business venture. It is so simple and easy to use and the service provided is first class.

When travelling to London it is extremely useful to make use of 116 Pall Mall and I love the free airport lounge access! I’ve not attended as many events as I’d like to - but the few I’ve managed to attend have all been excellent. In particular the Women’s Leadership Conference was inspiring and valuable for high end networking."

How does being a member of the IoD help you succeed in your career?

"As my business is business to business the key area that my membership has helped me scale up my business is in the area of personal recommendations both from the IoD team in Belfast and from other members. Being featured in one of the IoD magazines was a fantastic profile for me and ultimately led to three new clients for my senior voice coaching programme – can’t beat that! In addition the research service has been extremely useful in the launch of my new business which is now at product validation stage. I liked that I could use my membership across two different businesses."

How has the IoD changed for the better?

"I have only been a member for a couple of years but I feel that the IoD definitely has become a lot more accessible for smaller businesses such as mine and no longer feels as elitist as it once did."

What does being an entrepreneur mean to you?

"Freedom, risk taking, adventure! No two days are the same, nothing is easy but being able to do what inspires you, in your own way and reap the benefits is hugely rewarding. Couldn’t go back now!"

What would you say to anyone considering becoming a 99 member and would you recommend it?

"Being a member of IoD 99 has been hugely beneficial both to me personally and to the development of my businesses . This new membership tier is affordable and accessible so I would certainly recommend it – I have definitely got my money’s worth and more!"

If you could give one piece of advice to fellow entrepreneurs, what would it be and why?

“Seek out and connect with people who can help you and don’t be scared to ask– you don’t have to do it on your own - people are happy to help you and they want to."
