Ges Ray, IoD member

Carole O'neil

Partner, HR & Training

“Membership has given me access to a network of other Directors in my local area and elsewhere, as well as some great training opportunities.”

What was the main challenge you experienced as a business leader before joining the IoD?

"Having come through a functional route (in HR), I wanted to broaden my knowledge of wider business issues, and tap into a network of other Directors and resources, to help me perform my wider role as a business leader more effectively."

What have you found as a result of being an IoD member?

"Membership has given me access to a network of other Directors in my local area and elsewhere, as well as some great training opportunities. I found the training provided by the IoD (I have completed the Certificate and the Diploma in Company Direction) to be excellent, in building both knowledge and self-confidence."

How long have you been a member of the IoD?

"Almost 10 years."

What is your favourite thing about being part of the IoD Advance community?

"The opportunity to network with other members in my local area."

“Membership is definitely worth considering, as a means of broadening your professional network and gaining access to great resources.”

What are three other benefits you’ve enjoyed as a result of being a member?

"Economic and political information and commentary, great facilities for meetings at Pall Mall, and some really interesting articles in the monthly magazine."

“I found the training provided by the IoD to be excellent, in building both knowledge and self-confidence.”

How does being a member of the IoD help you succeed in your career?

"Through access to up to date, relevant materials and resources, reflecting the latest thinking in business. The economic insights from the Institution are particularly useful."

What does being a business leader mean to you?

"My favourite thing about my business is our genuine focus on providing opportunities for our people to do great things. The most rewarding aspect of my own role is seeing other people (within my own team and the wider business) grow and develop, and I derive a huge amount of satisfaction from knowing that I have helped to support this."

What would you say to anyone considering becoming a member and would you recommend it?

"Membership is definitely worth considering, as a means of broadening your professional network, and gaining access to great resources."

If you could give one piece of advice to fellow directors, what would it be and why?

“Talk to as many people as possible, as often as possible. The different perspectives that you gain on business issues often help you to see a problem in a new light, and can lead to much better solutions than if you try to figure everything out yourself!"
