Taking commercial board experience to the charity boardroom
Many of the skills that company directors have are relevant and in demand by charities.
However, to get the role, and hit the ground running requires an understanding of the different context.
This event will include speakers to include someone who bridged the sectors at board level, a charity chief executive who will describe what she needs from her board, and an experienced charity board head-hunter.

Speakers
Hilary Clifford
Hilary is an experienced Chair, NED and Trustee who brings her considerable expertise in complex leadership at Exec and Non exec level to Search and who has worked for a leading boutique firm to develop a thriving Board practice. Throughout her career she has led with strategic insight to steward organisations through complexity and change, and developed new businesses in the UK, Australia, Europe and Asia.
Hilary has breadth across the business disciplines, working as CEO, leading Business Development and Organisational Development. She also engages in interim leadership assignments and supports Board clients through Consulting, Coaching, Advisory and Search.
Jonathan Flowers FIoD
Jonathan is an experienced company director and chair who began supporting charities as a trustee in 1998 alongside a career which included Exec roles in financial services (Commercial Development Director of NatWest Card Services), local government (Deputy Chief Exec, Bedfordshire), and business services (Market Director, Capita). Having undertaken voluntary roles on the boards of charities and public organisations as well as for commercial entities he will provide an overview of differences and similarities to set the scene.
Suzy Moody
Suzy is the CEO of Home-Start Hertfordshire, a charity that provides families struggling with post-natal depression, isolation, mental & physical health problems, bereavement and many other issues the support of a volunteer family mentor who will spend around two hours a week in a family’s home. Through practical and emotional support, they make sure parents have the skills, confidence and strength they need to nurture their children.
Suzy became the CEO in December 2021 and has led the charity over the last 3 years. Prior to this Suzy was the Strategic Manager for the Charity since its inception in 2016, when a number of local Home-Starts amalgamated. Prior to this Suzy was the Manager at Home-Start St Albans.
