Children from six primary schools in Birmingham composed and performed a song with the CBSO at the Symphony Hall.
Qatar Airways supports local community's initiative through education and music
Birmingham, 15 June 2017 - Qatar Airways and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) partnered to give children from six Birmingham primary schools the once in a lifetime opportunity of composing and performing a song at Symphony Hall, Birmingham last night.
One hundred and eighty children worked with award-winning composer Eamonn O’Dwyer and the talented musicians from the CBSO to write a song encapsulating what Birmingham means to them. Following a series of music and creative writing workshops, Eamonn assembled the children’s words and ideas into a unique piece which was performed in front of an audience of friends and family on 14 June 2017, accompanied by a ten-piece ensemble made up from the Orchestra’s musicians.
Schools were selected following a city-wide call out to find the composers and musicians of tomorrow and, in order to take part; pupils had to describe what Birmingham meant to them. Anglesey Primary School, Gilbertstone Primary School, Harborne Primary School, Bournville Junior School, Thornton Primary School and Deykin Avenue Junior and Infant School were those selected and had students performing last night.
Glen Mintrim, VP North Europe for Qatar Airways said: “Qatar Airways is delighted to have been involved in such a heart-warming project and the children performed wonderfully. Nurturing the talent of tomorrow is something we hold dear as a company and look forward to future local collaborations. Birmingham is a very important part of our network and it is important to show our commitment to the UK and its regions; and thus to thank our passengers for their support and loyalty through initiatives that are meaningful to them and all of us."
Claire Vaughan, Bournville Junior School said: “The Children were so excited to help write the song and then perform their work in the Symphony Hall. Eammon and the CBSO musicians were amazing to work with. It’s been an incredibly inspiring project, and it’s fantastic to see how proud all the children are about the finished piece and performance.
As well as supporting this project, Qatar Airways sponsored the CBSO’s Key Stage 2 concerts earlier in June. Children from across Birmingham experienced the whole of the CBSO live, at a special concert that showcased music by British composers and music inspired by British culture including Harry Potter, James Bond and Bollywood tunes.
Qatar Airways has recently celebrated the one year anniversary of its Birmingham to Doha route, and is enjoying great success. The flight is operated by a state-of-the-art 254 seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner – representing a capacity of over 3,500 seats and over 110 tonnes of cargo carrying capacity per week to and from Birmingham.
