IoD South Ambassador Introduction
IoD South are pleased to be represented by IoD Ambassadors who are specialists in their fields. Our Ambassadors lead in their field, whilst also promoting the benefits of IoD membership and the CPD route to Chartered Director.
Below you will find an introduction to one of our highly valued Ambassadors who would be pleased to connect with you via Twitter or LinkedIn.
Your name: Rob May (FIoD)
Your title/role and company name: Managing Director, ramsac limited
Your IoD branch: Surrey
Your IoD Regional Ambassador role: Ambassador for Cybersecurity, IoD South
Your social media handles: LinkedIn
Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?
I’ve been involved with the IoD for about 10 years, my involvement started when I was nominated for the Director of the Year Awards. I was a finalist for two years running and on the back of that met-up with a regional director who encouraged me to become involved with the Surrey committee. I served as Vice Chair for three years and then Chairman for four years. I became a Fellow of the Institute a couple of years ago.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?
In my early career I worked for a number of international corporate software houses I founded ramsac in 1992 and have been the Managing Director there ever since. I am also a cybersecurity speaker for the Academy of Chief Executives and Vistage. I’m a TEDx speaker and delivered my Human Firewall TEDx Talk at the end of last year, that’s been really successful and it’s now had over 115,000 views, it’s led to me being a TEDx advisor and it was the source for my last book ‘We’re All Porn Stars’.
Q: What do you hope to achieve as an IoD Regional Ambassador?
Whatever I do I always want to make a difference, I want to help people and I want to leave a positive legacy. Cybersecurity is a HUGE issue and businesses aren’t giving it enough attention. Someone has their identity stolen online every 3 seconds and CEO Crime i.e. Whaling has a successful victim every 15 minutes in the UK. GDPR has a large focus on cybersecurity but many directors have attributed far more effort to marketing restrictions rather than the cyber elements and I want to help getting the message out there regarding this.
Q: What does being Cybersecurity Ambassador mean?
My role means that I am a spokesperson for the IoD on cybersecurity and this means I regularly give talks and lectures, I liaise with Universities and professional bodies (like the National Centre for Cyber Security), I give radio and TV interviews (at home and abroad). I’ve written course content for the IoD on Cybersecurity and I’m available as an expert to discuss the subject and represent the IoD and its members.
Q: If you could give your 21-year-old self some advice what would it be?
Always remember that the most important things in life aren’t things.
Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
I’ve two children still at primary school so they keep us busy. I’m a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of World Traders. I love to run and I race for The Road Runners Club. I’m a Governor at Churcher’s College (at both the junior school in Liphook and the senior school in Petersfield), I’m currently writing my next book, I travel with my various speaking engagements and of course I represent the IoD – that all tends to keep me quite busy!
Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?
Nothing keeps me awake at night, I close my eyes and I’m asleep almost instantly, this frustrates my wife no end but I always tell her that it’s a benefit of a clear conscience…
Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?
The IoD is about the growth, development and good governance of business leaders on an individual basis, your company doesn’t join, you do. I strongly believe that we are constantly evolving to become the person that we are supposed to be and in business terms I think IoD helps facilitate that.
Please contact the IoD South regional office for more information regarding becoming an IoD Ambassador.
