Introducing Berkshire Branch New Chair

21 Aug 2018
IoD Berkshire Chair

Introducing Raj Singh

Raj Singh, IoD Berkshire ChairQ: How long have you been involved with the IoD?

I have been an IoD member since 2012 with a break in between when I was mostly engaged in business outside of Europe.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?

I have over 34 years of diverse international industry experience, ranging from consulting and information technology to manufacturing and oil and gas, out of which over 20 years are in leadership positions. I started my career in oil and gas industry and have been focused on strategy and digital transformation space for the last fifteen years. My recent roles included consulting, international business development, sales and operational management. I have held executive management positions for multinational organisations like Oracle, Infor Group, HCL Technologies, Hexaware Technologies and Godrej.  I am a member of the justice and emergency services committee of techUK (http://www.techuk.org); an advisor to the National Police Chief’s Council (http://www.npcc.police.uk), Ministry of Interior, Finland and a $1 billion private equity organisation; while running my boutique strategy and digital transformation consulting organisation.

Q: What do you hope to achieve as Chairman?

I would like to make an effective contribution to the transformation of IoD Berkshire. I hope to achieve this by better engagement with our member community, strengthening and developing the IoD brand and significantly influencing local and national policies. Together with our members, I would like to promote corporate governance, fair participation of SME sector in economic decision making and making contribution to prepare the future generation of effective business leaders. We would like to set an ambitious but achievable vision for IoD Berkshire by leveraging our central resources, improving communication, building a visible IoD Berkshire in the local community and helping our current and future members to develop a thriving local and international business with managed risk. I am passionate about engaging with the younger generation to develop them as leaders of future and address the productivity challenges faced by our country. I sincerely believe that traditional organisations can effectively compete in the digital economy by leveraging their strengths and building complimentary digital capabilities. I am passionate about diversity and inclusion and would like to significantly enhance diversity of our membership base in Berkshire. Above all, I would like IoD members to take pride in being the member of this prestigious institution and a part of the IoD community.

Q: If you could give your 21-year-old self some advice what would it be?

Life is a marathon not sprint.

Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?

I love cycling and photography. I enjoy watching cricket and catching up on my reading in a nice independent café having some “Me Time”. I have some other aspirations, which I plan to fulfil in the years to come.

Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?

Sometimes I do worry about irresponsible mixing of politics with economics and rising rhetoric of nationalism and globalisation competing against each other. Increasing lip services to the SME sector by the key stakeholders and the lack of a well-developed political and economic framework to propel their growth, does keep me awake sometimes at night.

Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?

Business leaders should join this prestigious institution to develop, promote and demonstrate high standards of corporate governance and making sure that they make the right choices where public good is at odds with our own corporate or individual self-interest. IoD is an institution where individual leaders are recognised and promoted irrespective of their organisation size. It provides a sound platform to exchange knowledge and experience and create informal but effective networks. It gives a respected voice for its membership base to influence and shape  government polices. Above all, it supports business leaders in their entrepreneurial ventures with a cost efficient support structure and service portfolio throughout their journey.
