The IoD BMW iPerformance Directors’ lunch, held on 27 June at Coworth Park, highlighted the outstanding efficiency and other compelling benefits of the BMW iPerformance plug-in hybrid range.
Steve Oliver, General Manager Corporate Sales, and Mary Rennie, BMW i Sales Support Manager, entertained the delegates with presentations focusing on these innovative models and the future of sustainable motoring.
After the lunch, delegates were given the opportunity to test drive a selection of vehicles from the BMW iPerformance range and also the revolutionary BMW i range. These vehicles are the culmination of over 40 years of research and development, from the electric BMW 1602 in the 1960s to the recent refinement of sophisticated new technologies.
Using a combination of petrol and electric power, the BMW iPerformance range delivers all the styling and performance you’d expect from a BMW, with the fuel efficiency of a plug-in hybrid.
Available across the BMW 2, 3, 5, 7 Series and X5 models, the range provides the largest selection of plug-in hybrids on the market, and offers BIK rates from as low as 9%. The most fuel efficient model in the range, the BMW 330e Saloon, can achieve up to 148.7mpg. This means one tank of fuel lasts up to 400 miles.
The set-up varies slightly by model, but the foundation of the powertrain is the same across the range. A petrol engine sits at the front of the vehicle, while an electric motor and batteries can be found at the back. The drivetrain automatically distributes the power depending on the situation, so drivers can relax and let the car do the work.
All BMW iPerformance models can be easily charged at home through a conventional household power socket via the supplied standard charging cable – 100% power can be achieved in approximately 3.5 hours.
For added speed and convenience, there's the wall-mounted BMW i Wallbox Plus, which reduces charging time to just over two hours for a full charge and, depending on your energy supplier and tariff, can cost as little as 60p. What's more, using BMW Green Energy and partner Good Energy, there is also the option to switch to a greener contract, ensuring that the energy you use is produced sustainably.
With over 11,000 charging points to choose from across the UK, the systems and infrastructure are already in place to make charging away from home easy and convenient. All BMW iPerformance models are compatible with AC Fast Charge for an even quicker turnaround. To make life easier still, there’s the option of the ChargeNow card, which allows for monthly payments instead of having to use cash.
Innovative systems such as Predictive Energy Management and BMW ConnectedDrive give drivers all the information they need to make their plug-in hybrid work for them. By default, the car’s energy management system identifies the optimum combination of petrol and electric power, depending on the driving scenario. In addition, eDrive mode can be activated for emission-free driving.

Official fuel economy figures for the BMW iPerformance range: Combined 83.1-148.7mpg (3.4-1.9l/100km). CO2 emissions 78-44g/km. Figures are obtained in a standardised test cycle using a combination of battery power and petrol fuel after the battery has been fully charged. They are intended for comparisons between vehicles and may not be representative of what a user achieves under usual driving conditions. The BMW iPerformance range is a selection of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that require mains electricity for charging.
