Nutrition and Diet Resources UK (NDR-UK) is a company limited by guarantee, with charitable status, being registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). The organisation produces patient information for dietitians and other health professionals to use, to help educate and support their patients to self-manage their health conditions through correct nutrition. The resources are highly valued for the quality and presentation of the information, having been written by dietitians and other experts, following current evidence-based practice. The organisation employs a small, dedicated team of four (FTE of 3.2). It is based in Glasgow but has an established customer base from across the UK, mainly in the public sector.
NDR-UK began trading in 2011, with initial grant income from Scottish Government helping to establish a stable social enterprise with a consistent annual turnover of just under £250k. The bulk of income is achieved from trading – via the sales of the patient information provided in printed and electronic formats. Some additional income is also achieved through undertaking commissioned project work. Even during the exceptional challenges of the past year, almost 90% of average turnover was achieved, including 76% of average sales income.
The Board of Non-Executive Directors/Trustees collectively work to provide governance, strategic direction and support to the organisation. The current Board of six, which includes four dietitians, is looking to appoint a further Trustee/Director with complementary skills and experience to help the organisation grow and develop to meet emerging health sector challenges. Ideally, the ability to contribute in the following areas would be welcomed:
• Financial and business management expertise – within the social enterprise/charity sector could be additionally useful
• Development of opportunities in digital health
• Strategy development and Board level management and support
On a practical level, the Board meets 4 times a year, currently through tele-conferencing, although we hope to be able to return to face-to-face meetings at least once a year in the future (previously held in either Glasgow or Birmingham). This position is non-remunerated, although travel and subsistence costs are covered.
