Grampian Autistic Services (GAS) supports around 100 families each year in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. It has a whole range of services for children and adults, from playschemes to employability support. It is the largest provider of autism specific services in the region.

As with so many similar charities, it has fallen victim to reduced statutory funding at a time when there is increasing demand for its services. It has also had mixed success when it comes to tendering for local authority services. This has resulted in a reduced staff team and fewer programmes and projects. I would like to say that my support workers on one-to-one are very good. They help me to do things in my house and we go away for day trips on the bus. All the staff are good and help me with all my problems as well.

The service has traditionally been lead by a General Manager with expertise in special needs service delivery. However, the current challenges for charities are significant with funding pots reducing, Covid 19 and Brexit bringing additional pressures. The Board knows it has to change the current approach to being more business-minded and build a model which is fit for the future. To this end, it has decided to change the organisational structure to bring in a Chief Executive Officer with strong business development and financial skills. He/she will be asked to review all aspects of the organisation, including income generation and how to diversify income streams, before the Board signs off its final strategy. There will be a requirement to be ambitious and deliver a growth strategy while being much more externally focussed to engage with key stakeholders. This will include building funding relationships and partnerships with major and corporate donors. The Board would also like to expand services across the geographic area. The General Manager will move into the Chief Operating Officer position so the charity will retain that extensive knowledge and skills.

You will need to have all the leadership experience and skills required of an inspirational and effective Lead Officer. Although you need not necessarily come from the third sector, you will also need to have an understanding of how the third sector works and how an organisation like GAS fits in. You will also need to have a natural empathy for the service users and a passion for GAS’s mission.
