Lisa's November Round Up!

07 Dec 2018

IoD Northern Ireland Round UpAs our inboxes fill up with invitations to Christmas Drinks and we start to sneak mince pies into the office, we are preparing for another busy 6 months filled with engaging, exciting and enlightening events.

2018 was hugely successful for IoD NI. We welcomed 150 new members from a range of sectors. We hosted over 60 events, across NI, from small, private dinners with key influencers to well-established conferences and informative events. The Women’s Leadership Conference and the Annual Dinner each attracted over 450 business leaders, while the Young Directors Conference and New Director Bootcamp set the stage for our new and aspiring directors.

Leadership Lunch

“Investing in management and leadership training will build better leaders, better businesses and a better economy” was the key message at the IoD Northern Ireland Leadership Lunch.

The event held at Belfast City Hall, which brought together business leaders from organisations across Northern Ireland and experts from the fields of productivity and skills, provided the launch for the IoD’s Leadership Dividend report.

The study, which was commissioned to determine the value of professional development for managers and directors, found more than half of business leaders that underwent training said it had a positive impact on their organisation’s productivity and skills.

The event also heard from Dr Neil Bentley, originally from Belfast who is Chief Executive of WorldSkills UK, a partnership between governments, employers and education which aims to help accelerate young people's career development.

He was joined by Microsoft Ireland Commercial Director Aisling Curtis and Tony Danker, also from Belfast, who is Chief Executive of ‘Be The Business’, a new business-led organisation created to close the UK’s productivity gap.

Connect and Influence: Brexit

Leading Brexit commentator Tony Connelly addressed business leaders in The Stormont Hotel on 21st November 2018 as debate around the UK’s exit from the European Union intensifies.

The RTE News Europe Editor spoke to over 120 business leaders at the event entitled ‘Connect and Influence: Preparing your business for Brexit’ kindly sponsored by BDO NI and Carson McDowell.

As Europe Editor for RTE, Tony Connelly has been ever present on our television screens since the EU Referendum. With high-level access to those involved in the Brexit debate on all sides, he has gained a reputation for providing in-depth analysis of the issues involved and an ability to communicate the most complex of matters to audiences with clarity and meaning.

Tony was joined in a panel discussion at the event by Allie Renison (Head of Europe and Trade Policy at the IoD), Maybeth Shaw (Partner, BDO) and Richard Gray (Partner, Carson McDowell).
