Unfortunately, this is not the update we had planned to publish this month. We had intended to share the great feedback from our Women’s Leadership Conference, celebrate the success of the shortlisted applications for Director of the Year Award and applaud our new Chartered Directors!
However, we are all now working and living in uncharted times and what was so important a few weeks ago is now seemly unimportant. Through our regular emails, social media updates and personal connections we are doing our utmost to ensure you are up to date with the latest communications. IoD has and will continue to provide guidance, advice and support on the ever-changing guidelines that are coming out around COVID-19. Our Coronavirus Hub is regularly updated and covers all recent amendments made to the government support schemes. There is also information on Northern Ireland specific assistance. Information is available on:
- Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme
- Business Relief Rates
- Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS)
- Emergency Insolvency Measures
- Self-employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS)
- COVID-19 Supplier Relief

We understand that the level and frequency of COVID -19 related information can be overwhelming and in some cases still leaves lots of unanswered questions. That is why we are urging all members and the wider business community to continue to share their issues and concerns with us. The information you share is not going into a black hole, concerns around HMRC’s helpline, responses from banks received by members, late payment issues and others are all being fed back to the relevant departments, and we will keep on it. Over the next few days we will shift slightly from the announcement phase to the implementation phase, so details are still crucial.
On a more positive note - it is great to see so many of our IoD members offering their support during these difficult times. A few examples of some member support are offered below. We have numerous offers of help and will be happy to connect across all sectors. Again, please get in touch!
- RNN Communications – PR, Crisis Management, Planning. Get in touch here
- Bitwise Group - development of safety-critical software and systems for certified medical products and services. Contact directly here
- Carson McDowell, Pinsent Masons and Eversheds - legal advice for IoD members.
Whilst we have had to put a halt on events for the moment, we have been getting more technical than ever at IoD NI. We are working hard behind the scenes to transfer events to online webinars so that our members can join us from the comfort of their homes! This is a work in progress but please keep an eye out on our social media channels () for webinar updates. Our upcoming webinars are likely to cover topics such as insolvency, employment law and financial support. If there’s any topics in particular you would like to see covered in a webinar please email email@example.com
Due to the unprecedented times we face we have made the decision to move the Director of the Year Awards 2020 to a new date of Friday 11th September at the Merchant Hotel. Although regrettable, we do not wish to put anyone at unnecessary risk and hold a duty of care to our guests, sponsors, staff and suppliers who attend the event. Spirits we hope will have lifted by then and we can bring everyone together for a celebration to acknowledge the achievements of so many exceptional business leaders.
IoD Academy Update
Directors all over the world are facing a huge crisis. In times of crisis, directors (and boards) have a unique role to play.
Communication is key, now and always. Directors must adequately communicate with shareholders and stakeholders and must make big decisions, that will ultimately shape the future of their organisations.
Plausible deniability is no longer acceptable. Crises are inevitable, but it is up to you, as a director, to fully understand your fiduciary duties.
