I have a confession - as a non-golfer I was only vaguely interested in the hype on the lead up to The Open – I wanted it to go well, but didn’t plan to watch or attend. I did both – with enthusiasm and pride. What a tremendous week for NI. The scenery was amazing and the welcome outstanding – what a showcase for all involved. This was definitely a case of NI punching well above its weight.
And that theme has continued for me during the rest of July as I have been out and about doing member visits. I am constantly in awe of the innovative and enterprising businesses we have. From medical devices dominating the Chinese market, to new construction techniques being employed in London’s major infrastructure products, to animation and film being broadcast around the world – our expertise and global reach is excellent.
Resilience and enterprise – will be needed more than ever as we move into a tumultuous period in the run up to the current deadline for the UK to leave the EU. Brexit has and will continue to dominate many business discussions and decisions and rightly so given the enormity of the impending change, however, it is equally important that company directors do not ignore the fundamental of good business governance and leadership.
The IoD has a large selection of resources aimed at helping directors with the business fundamentals. Grouped under the heading of The IoD Factsheet Collection - this is a resource of over 300 pieces of content. Each factsheet provides help to IoD members to be an effective director and successful business leader. Many of the factsheets include functions which allow IoD members to request additional resources. Areas of support range from effective corporate governance, Director Advisory Service, legal and tax helplines, market research, competitor analysis and guidance on working abroad… to name a few areas. The majority of this advice is free to IoD members - so please take some time over the summer, when things are maybe a little less hectic, to ensure you are on top of your business essentials. More information on IoD factsheets can be found here.
