IoD North West has had an incredible couple of months. Here are a few highlights
Hosted by the BBC’s Dan Walker, and with a lot of high calibre entries, the North West Awards in May culminated in The Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Director and Board Practice. It was presented to Geoff Thompson MBE, five times Karate world champion and now Chief Executive of Youth Charter in Salford (a charity that supports disadvantaged young people). Geoff was moved and surprised to win, and his enthusiasm quickly spread to the audience – he received a standing ovation, and there was not a dry eye in the house. You can watch the highlights here
The North West Annual Conference’ theme, Purposeful Leadership, was based on Simon Sinek’s book and TED Talk, Start with Why. It took place in Liverpool for the first time, at the International Business Festival in June. This inspirational event focused on purpose beyond profit, and speakers ranged William Shawcross CVO to young entrepreneur Matt Haworth, and Deb Oxley from the Employee Ownership Association. The format combined TED style speeches and Michael Parkinson style interviews, and was compered by Regional Director Claire Ebrey. Feedback to date has been outstanding. Watch the highlights here.
July saw our flagship (!!) event in Cumbria ‘A Cruise on Windermere’. Professor Julie Mennell, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cumbria was the keynote speaker on a glorious July evening.
Fellows and Chartered Directors’ Dinner
We also held our first ever dinner for Chartered Directors and Fellows, at the wonderful The French restaurant at the Midland Hotel in Manchester (where Rolls met Royce!). Great British Menu star Adam Reid, gave us an insight into his hopes and dreams for the venue, and then presented us with a delightful 6 course menu to network over. We also heard from Christine Noblett, Managing Director of Cheshire-based business Aboveline, who design bespoke exhibition stands and 3 dimensional structures. See a short video from Christine here.
Recognition for the North West
In July, The North West team scooped two ‘Above and Beyond Awards’, recognition from our Director General for the work we do in the region every day. Huge congratulations to Lauren Mullan and Emily Martin for all their hard work and effort to bring positive change.
Walking tour of Royal Albert Dock
Lastly, we had a wonderful walking tour and summer social in Liverpool. We heard from Sue Grindrod, CE of Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool and Suzy Jones, Director of RIBA North, about their future plans. And we learnt about the history of the Dock and its surroundings, finishing at PanAm for more networking, drinks and canapés!
Golf Day | 30 August
We go a bit quiet in August, as so many people are on holiday, but we have a golf day. Our Regional Director, Claire, invites you to a casual golf day at her club, Tytherington in Cheshire. The event will include breakfast, 18 holes of golf and a two-course lunch.
