Hello Team North West! Can you believe we’re in March already?
I hope you all had a fabulous February, and enjoyed the glimmer of sunshine, even if it was only short-lived! A huge thank you to all who came to support our events last month, we hope you took something useful away from each of them. For those who didn’t get a chance to attend any, here’s a bit of an overview of what we’ve been up to.
The month began with session two of our Youth Leadership Passport events, which covered the topic of Politics and why young people should care. We were delighted to be joined by Mayor Andy Burnham, who listened and engaged with our young leaders regarding their concerns and hopes for the future of our city region. Black and Minority Ethnic leaders are under-represented, and IoD North West is running this programme to help shift this balance, make a difference and reap the rewards for our region. – Here’s an article on it if you’d like to

We also hosted our very first webinar last month, it covered the key elements of scenario planning - when you should be using it, why, and how to create success for your business during times of uncertainty. We got some fantastic feedback so will be making these a regular occurrence.
The next webinar will be on pricing: 'how to price your platypus' which will offer simple but effective ways to increase your price and get to grips with which price point is best for you. The IAS have also created a factsheet on this which you might find helpful, you can read this here.
Members also visited Congleton for our manufacturing tour of Siemens Digital Factory which gave them an to opportunity to learn about industry 4.0, to explore best practices and expand their knowledge of how the processes used by Siemens can be implemented in real world.
The end of Feb was a powerful few weeks of events for IoD North West. The first was our Modern day slavery event at The Co-op. IoD member Paul Gerrard touched upon their ‘Bright Future’ programme which strives to break the cycle of exploitation and prevents re-trafficking by offering a pathway to paid employment for survivors of modern slavery. We also heard from Susan Banister of Slave Free Alliance which is a charity dedicated to preventing exploitation, rescuing victims and reforming society. We were inspired to see the work being done to tackle this issue and gained key insights on how to spot modern slavery within your own business and contribute towards a fairer and more ethical business environment.
In Lancashire, 'Diversity in the boardroom' took place at Burnley College, and covered the topic of diversity and its importance within the business environment. Thanks to our fantastic panel of speakers who each shared their own stories, attendees left with memorable insights on how a diverse and inclusive culture can revolutionise the success of your business.
Last week, in Manchester we were joined by leaders at Patagonia, Brew Tea Co., Danone and Pentameter for our most recent event ‘Ethical business – an introduction to B Corp’. The event welcomed a full house of both members and non members to hear about B Corp and the journey in becoming B Certified. B Corps are a new type of business that balance purpose and profit and meet only the highest standards of verified social and environmental, performance, transparency and accountability. It was fantastic to hear the vision of B Corps global movement and the work being done to reinvent business as a force for good no matter how big or small the company may be. Find out more about B Corp here.
And to round up our February update, IoD North West were honoured to support the first ever national IoD student Membership team with their annual conference – Inspiring future leaders which took place at Salford University. The event brought together student members from across the country for a day of networking and the opportunity to and meet and hear from some of the most prominent names in business. The day ended with some words of inspiration which I think we can all take something away from: ‘’It’s not about what you know, or who you know, but who knows you. Be better equipped, known and connected’’ – Andy Lopata.
