Simone Robinson, Head of Regional Relationships for IoD East of England puts Rahul Garella under the spotlight
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?
A: I have over 20 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry with broad international experience across the European, Asian and Latin American markets. In my current role as Senior Vice President, Head of International Pharmaceuticals, I have responsibility for Endo’s international businesses, including entities in the UK, Canada, Mexico, South Africa. Previously I served as Senior Vice President for Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Europe Limited from 2005 until 2014. Former roles have included working with other pharmaceutical companies operating in Europe and the Asia-Pacific markets.
Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
A: I enjoy spending time with my family - my wife, an ophthalmologist working for the NHS is my biggest pillar of support and I learn something new every day from my two sons. When I am travelling, I find that a good book makes the miles disappear; I just finished reading ‘Soldier Spy’ by Tom Marcus. I regularly drag myself to go to the gym and have recently started learning to play the piano.
Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?
A: I have been a member since 2009 and looking back, it was the prestige of the institution, the location (Pall Mall) and the opportunity to network and learn from other like-minded people that attracted me to the IoD in the first place. The IoD is a wonderful institution and it was through a meeting at the IoD Pall Mall, that I struck an important deal several years ago and have never looked back since.
Q. Tell us a little about life in Hertfordshire.
A: Hertfordshire is an amazing county with a great mix of vibrant and dynamic industries, close proximity to London, excellent transport infrastructure and a culture that’s progressive and forward looking. Being the largest county in the East of England, it is the county of opportunity!
Q: Why did you apply for the Chairmanship role?
A: I feel that businesses, big and small, play a pivotal role in driving progress and many of these do so in a quiet, unassuming way! The IoD stands out as a unique institution offering a compelling platform for individuals in leadership positions to learn, network and progress. Having been involved with the dynamic and innovative pharmaceutical industry and through my journey of setting up a business from scratch and managing multi-country operations, I felt that I could use my understanding and experience of what makes businesses and people tick for the benefit of the IoD and its members.
Q: What do you hope to achieve over your 3 years as IoD Hertfordshire Chairman?
A: These are rapidly changing times and they present limitless opportunities! Over the next 3 years, I would like to focus on increasing the share of voice for women, create industry and knowledge networks and position the IoD as a valuable and meaningful partner to the IoD members in Hertfordshire. I plan on working closely with the leadership team at IoD-Herts at the team at Pall Mall to engage, enable and equip our members for success!
