On Tuesday 18th September IoD Hertfordshire (inc. Bedfordshire) were kindly invited to go behind the scenes at the Vauxhall Van Manufacturing Plant in Luton.
Members and non-members arrived at 10.15am and the event started with coffee, pastries and networking before introductions were made by Richard McBarnet, our IoD Hertfordshire Chair, and members of the team at Luton Vauxhall. A short plant overview presentation was then given by the Vauxhall Plant Director, Mark Wright, giving details on their working methods, shift patterns and methods for combating staff absences. As well as details on their award winning Vivaro, which is exported to over 27 countries and with 40% local content contributes £148 million to the UK Economy.
After putting on fluorescent jackets, and audio equipment (to enable us to hear our guide) we were given a fascinating tour around the factories Body Shop and General Assembly Units and were able to see the manufacture of the Vivaro Vans from start to the finished product. The tour lasted approximately 90 minutes.
With thanks to the Vauxhall team for such a well organised and interesting morning.
