IoD Essex Considers Alternative Solutions to the Skills Shortage

John Granneman 06 Mar 2019
skills shortage

With companies in Essex finding it harder than ever to recruit the skilled workers they need to facilitate business growth, IoD Essex brought together a panel of experts to share their thoughts on the alternative ways that companies can reach and recruit the staff that they need.

Our experts included Andrew Sparks, Principal and CEO at Chelmsford College,  Ian Banks FIRP - Director and Head of Talent Acquisition at One to One Personnel,  Jane Stock, Organisational Development Director at Weston Group Plc and David Carey, Head of Organisation Development at Aspiring Solicitors.

Bringing together these skills specialists enabled us to gain the thoughts of experts from a variety of different backgrounds and industries and gave us interesting and informative answers the questions posed firstly by our event facilitator Ross Chaplin, Owner of The Training Team Ltd and IoD Essex Skills Ambassador and then from the questions raised from our members and guests.

With skills shortages reaching “critical levels” in the last quarter of 2018, our experts provided some thought-provoking ideas for employers to expand their reach beyond what are viewed as traditional employment markets and recruit the staff they need from alternative areas. The session concluded with the opportunity for members and guests to network and share ideas and best practice with each other, generating some valuable ideas and discussions.

IoD Essex would like to thank Ross Chaplin, all of our panel speakers and Little Easton Manor for hosting our event.

I thought the event was great, really interesting to hear people’s take on skill shortages and the innovative thinking going on. Marion Whitty, Head of Learning & Development - Countryside Properties

Thank you for the warm welcome I received, I enjoyed the event very much and hope to attend again. David Goody, Tutor/Assessor - Crown Vocational Training
