IoD Branch Ambassador Introduction
IoD East of England are pleased to be represented across our vibrant and successful region by IoD Ambassadors who are specialists in their fields. Our IoD Ambassadors are charged with leading in a chosen topic area/function that is their expertise or focus, whilst also promoting the benefits of IoD membership and the CPD route to Chartered Director.
Below you will find an introduction to one of our highly valued Ambassadors who would be pleased to connect with you via Twitter or LinkedIn. Please contact the IoD East of England regional office for more information regarding becoming an IoD Ambassador.
Your Name: Malcolm Johnston
Your title/role and company name: Regional Director, The Marketing Centre
Your IoD branch: Cambridgeshire
Your IoD Branch Ambassador role: Marketing
Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?
My international business experience was primarily gained during 17 years with THORN EMI, BT, Cable & Wireless, T-Mobile and Telstra during which time I undertook many roles in sales, marketing, channel management and strategy from Product Manager to Sales & Marketing Director. I worked in the USA where I created and led the C&W international sales organisation and major bids team. Prior to my commercial career, I served for 5 years in the ARMY IN Northern Ireland, Germany and (briefly) Hong Kong.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy & Business Law (Stirling University) a Diploma in Global Business Leadership (Georgetown University, Washington D.C.) and an MSc in Strategic Marketing Management (Anglia Ruskin University). I teach at a number of Universities including Syracuse London, Essex and Queen Mary College, London. I’m a Chartered Marketer, Chartered Manager and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Chartered Management Institute. I have been a member of the CIM Regional Board, a District Councillor and I also served for two years on the East of England Industrial Development Board.
Q: What do you hope to achieve as an IoD Branch Ambassador?
I hope to help members to get the most out of marketing by focusing on the strategic rather than the operational. I also hope to be able to represent the IoD to media outlets so we spread the word about the enterprising east!
Q: If you could give your 21 year old self some advice what would it be?
Make your own way and don’t take the easy way out.
Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
Riding my horse, Anna, cycling and trying to stay fit. Theatre and eating out with my wife.
Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?
The UK’s poor productivity and the fact that so many SMEs I come across demonstrate a paucity of ambition.
Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?
Advice, support (tangible and intangible) and representation of our views to Government.
