Winners announced for IoD East Midlands 2018 Awards

Shahid Sheikh OBE, Managing Director of Clifton Packaging Group Ltd in Leicester, was named as the Institute of Directors (IoD) East Midlands Director of the Year.

He was praised by competition judges for running: “A truly multi-cultural company, employing people from many different nationalities.” Shahid won the overall award but also won the Inclusivity category and jointly, with Simon Rice, the Innovation category and was Highly-Commended in the Global category of the awards. In 2017 Shahid had won the IoD East Midlands International award and the SME Medium Company category.

Another multiple winner was Gary Headland, CEO of Lincoln College Group who won both the Public and Not-for Profit Sector and the Global awards. Judges commented: “Gary is a stand out performer. There was ample evidence of putting plans into action and having assessed and picked his team, then believing in the quality of others to deliver his strategic aims.”

Some 130 guests attended the IoD East Midlands Director of the Year 2018 awards, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Nottingham. Thirty-two of the region’s successful, established and emerging new directors and business leaders were finalists in the awards. Winners of the ten categories will go forward to the IoD’s national finals in London on 18 October.  The event was hosted by Dominic Heale, BBC East Midlands presenter.

East Midlands winners and highly-commended by county:


Simon Rice, Managing Director of HSG UK Ltd jointly won the Innovation award. Judges said he had demonstrated: “Some great examples of product and service innovation.Solving problems and coming up with commercially-viable and marketeable solutions.”

Josh Stamp, Director of The Esland Group Ltd, won the New Director award. Judges said: “Josh is clearly a game changer with a “can do” approach to challenges.”

The Corporate Responsibility category was won jointly by Jillian Thomas, Managing Director of Future Life Wealth Management and Helen Wathall, Managing Director of G Wathall and Son Ltd, who was also Highly-Commended in the Family Director category. Judges said of Jillian: “This is a director who understands that a healthy community is good for both society and business.” They said of Helen’s business: “An impressive organisation driving change and innovation in a sensitive sector.”

Gemma Grant, a graduating Nottingham Trent University law student from Chesterfield, won Tomorrow’s  Director award. Judges said: “Gemma has a clear focus on her future career in the law. She is not only passionate about her own success but also the success of others.”

Dan Miller, CEO of Young Professionals UK was Highly-Commended in the Innovation category, Katrina Starkie, Strategic Director of Purpose Media was Highly-Commended in the Small and Medium Enterprise category.


Shahid Sheikh, Managing Director of Clifton Packaging Group Ltd, won overall Director of the Year, along with Innovation and Inclusivity awards. Judges said of the Innovation award: “A great example of a truly market-orientated business, working in partnership with customers to develop and pioneer innovative packaging solutions.”

Pete Frost, won the Non-Executive Director category. Judges commented: “Good application of Pete’s commercial knowledge and experience in ensuring the board considered future revenue and viability.”

Ashley Cooper, Senior Partner of Ashley Cooper Young Chartered Surveyors was Highly-Commended in Innovation category.  Martin Ruda, Group Managing Director of Checkprint Ltd gained an H/C in Global.


Gary Headland, CEO Lincoln College Group won the Public and Not-for-Profit award, along with the Global award. Judges commented that Gary was: “ A great example of a Director being a role model and building relationships at the highest level.”

Mel Booth, Managing Director, GB Scaffolding gained a Highly-Commended in the New Director category; Jenine Butroid, Owner/Director, Supporting Minds, a Highly-Commended in Public and Not-for Profit; Karl Hick, Managing Director, Larkfleet Group, a Highly-Commended for Corporate Social Responsibility;

Dean Hyde, Managing Director, Camper UK, a Highly-Commended in the Family category; Geoff McManus, Managing Director, Harlaxton Engineering Service Ltd and Bruce Spencer-Knott, Managing Director of Minster Surfacing Ltd, were both awarded Highly-Commended for Innovation


Aaron Dicks, Managing Director, Impressions Digital Ltd, Nottingham, who comes from Northampton, won the Small and Medium Enterprise category. Judges said of his company: “A very good, well run, ethical company which could build to be a world beater.”

Karl Hodgkinson, Group Commercial Director, Howard Tenens Ltd won the Family Director award. Judges commented: “An excellent entry for a focussed individual and company excelling in its sector.”

Rebecca Harding, CEO Saltwhistle gained a Highly-Commended in the Non-Executive Director category.


Aaron Dicks, Managing Director, Impressions Digital Ltd, won the Small and Medium Enterprise category. Judges said of his company: “A very good, well run, ethical company which could build to be a world beater.”

Richard Gill, CEO, Drone Defence Service Ltd won the Start-up Director category. Judges said Richard was : “An excellent example of identifying an opportunity and having the vision and capability to innovate and successfully bring to market.”

Martin Sandhu, Managing Director, Roller Agency gained a Highly-Commended in the SME category.

Jake Third, Sales and Marketing Director, Hallam Internet, gained a Highly-Commended in the New Director category.
