Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?
At least 14 years.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?
After initially aiming to study Law and German, I went on to do a degree in Law, Business and Sport – three areas which have remained of interest throughout my career.
I joined Franklins Solicitors LLP in 1992 as a Trainee Solicitor, qualified in 1994 becoming a Partner in 1997. My role has always been working to resolve conflict and disputes. My experience covers a wide range of corporate commercial and civil areas of law as both a litigator and a Mediator.
I am a dual accredited Mediator gaining the CEDR (Centre of Effective Dispute Resolution) and London Regent’s University School of Psychotherapy and Psychology accreditations as well as a certified NLP Master Practitioner.
Working in the local business community has always been important to me and I chaired the Northamptonshire branch of the IoD for a number of years as well helping develop the IoD’s East Midlands Young Directors Forum…too many years ago! I was also an independent member of The University of Northampton’s Audit Committee for 8 years and a Director of the local LEP, Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership, before its merger with SEMLEP. In 2015, I was named Solicitor of the Year by Northamptonshire Law Society in recognition of contributions to the local business community.
Q: What do you hope to achieve as an IoD Ambassador?
The last decade in particular has seen an increase in regulation with most sectors having to allocate increased resource to fulfil their compliance obligations and retain good governance. These issues along with disputes can distract from moving a business forward and dampen the entrepreneurial spirit that creatively seeks to fulfil a company’s vision. I enjoy the opportunity of helping businesses through these issues in order to enable them to focus upon their goals.
Q: If you could give your 21 year old self some advice what would it be?
Be bold and courageous.
Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
Friends and Family. I enjoy going to the theatre, watching all types of sport and being involved with my local church.
Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?
I sleep well.
Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?
Fuel the inspiration, creativity and passion for your business with others who can challenge you without a vested interest – we all continue to learn and the resources of the IoD will continue to extend your comfort zone and knowledge if you engage proactively and keep ahead of your competition.
