Meet David Thompson, IoD Ambassador for Professional Services and Finance
David is the Chief Operating Officer and a director at Wright Vigar Chartered Accountants, who have offices in Lincoln, London, Gainsborough, Newark, Retford and Sleaford. He has responsibility for day-to-day management of the business and for its HR, IT, financial control and marketing functions, as well as formulating strategy and direction with the board. He hopes to use his new role with the IoD to support other members in this sector
Q: How long have you been involved with the IoD?
Over 10 years and a member of the Lincolnshire committee for most of that time.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your career to date?
24 years with HSBC Bank in a variety of roles including leadership, Corporate Finance, Branch and Area management, international and head office up to Area Director level. Also, in different locations including East Midlands, Yorkshire and Jersey / International.
8 years with Handelsbanken (Swedish Bank) as Branch Manager in Lincoln. Established the branch from a new start and built up into a mature and profitable business.
3 years with Wright Vigar Chartered Accountants as Chief Operating Officer and to be appointed a director shortly. The role is responsible for the day to day operation of the business including internal finance, HR, Marketing, Practice Management, IT and Payroll. Also formulating strategy and direction at board level and some client work around corporate finance / banking.
Q: What do you hope to achieve as an IoD Ambassador?
To share my experiences and knowledge if this can be useful to IoD members, and to learn from others in this role.
Q: If you could give your 21 year old self some advice what would it be?
Focus on your strengths and keep learning. Have some patience along the way!
Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
Family, travelling and trying to improve my golf handicap.
Q: Are there any business related or policy issues that keep you awake at night?
No not really.
Q: Why do you think business leaders should join the IoD?
To share their experience and support fellow directors. To learn from each other, have a collective approach to business issues and promote good corporate governance.
