We held our annual and prestigious black tie dinner in the splendid Egyptian Room of the Mansion House in June.
The event was held in the presence of The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor Alderman the Lord Mountevans, the Lady Mayoress, the Sheriffs and their consorts.
Our guest speaker was Eileen Burbidge MBE, a partner at Passion Capital, an early-stage technology venture capital investment firm. She is the Chair of Tech City UK, in the Prime Minister Business Advisory Group, as HM Treasury's Special Envoy for FinTech, & the Tech Ambassador for the Mayor of London.
She addressed innovation and the need for openness, as well as her desire for Britain remaining in a reformed European Union. Tech is restricted if talent is unable to move. The vote later in the month for the UK to leave the European Union came as a surprise to many but it is hoped that the City of London will remain competitive and open to talent and tech advancements in the wake of Brexit.
The opportunities for investors, including would-be angel investors in the tech sector was also highlighted. Supporting emerging firms in the FinTech world, for example, could be extremely lucrative for a variety of groups and individuals, from investment syndicates to individuals who want to give their experience as well as their money to some of the exciting start-up firms emerging from the City.
The champagne reception was followed by a three course dinner and a ‘stirrup cup’ before carriages. The event brought together business leaders from many sectors in a convivial atmosphere with extensive networking and merrymaking.
