City of London

Malaysia and ASEAN: Opportunities and Challenges

30 Jun 2016
Kuala Lumpur

The IoD City of London branch partnered up with the British Malaysian Society and Standard Chartered Bank to discuss the economic opportunities and challenges presented by Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region in the coming year.

The Association of South East Nations (ASEAN) community is a political, socio-cultural and economic organisation of 10 South East Asian countries. With a combined population of over 600 million people and a GDP of USD 2.3trn, if the Association were a single entity it would rank as the seventh largest economy in the world.

The Lord Mayor Alderman Alan Yarrow, who was born in Malaysia, debriefed attendees on his May visit to the region (which included a trip to Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore).  He was also joined by a panel of eminent speakers to discuss Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN and what ASEAN integration means for business and the financial sector, together with the roadmap of the future and analysis of what progress has already been made.

As well as the Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of London, we were also fortunate enough to be joined by His Excellency Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi, the High Commissioner of Malaysia, Dr Mohamed Razeen Sally, Associate Professor of Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore and Vasuki Shastry, Group Head of Public Affairs at Standard Chartered Bank. After the panel presentations we were allowed an opportunity for questions and answers with the speakers, followed by a drinks reception and networking.
