On 24th February our China Special Interest Group held its annual Chinese New Year banquet at the Bright Courtyard Club in Baker Street.
The dinner followed a highly successful visit to Chengdu in September 2014 led by the group chair Mei Sim Lai. During the visit the delegation covered issues related to property, leisure, high-tech business and the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. In keeping with the Chengdu theme, this year’s New Year dinner focussed on Sichuan government visitors and tasty Sichuan cuisine.
Sichuan has much to offer to IoD members who are interested in setting up in China particularly in the hi-tech sector where the Sichuan government has a range of incentives for foreign companies. Besides being well known for its panda, Sichuan is famous for its commerce and is a region of China with a high number of successful entrepreneurs and the highest sales in branded goods.
The evening commenced with a networking drinks reception followed by a dinner with items specially chosen by Mei Sim, including lobster with noodles and other exquisite dishes. The guests were then entertained with traditional music and a Lion Dance.
The 19th February marks the start of the Year of the Sheep. According to folklore people born in this year are generally believed to be gentle, mild-mannered, shy, stable, sympathetic, amicable and brimming with a strong sense of kind-heartedness and justice. They have very delicate thoughts, strong creativity, and perseverance. Though they prefer to be in groups, they do not want to be the centre of attention. They like to spend money on fashionable things that give them a first class appearance.
