COVID-19 is an unprecedented challenge for IoD members in London Region and our fellow members in the rest of the UK and overseas. I am aware that business is severely disrupted for UK and international trade; many of IoD London Region members are active in non-UK markets.
The IoD is fully engaging with the Government on a constant basis; you will have seen the various press releases on a range of topics. The common theme is about keeping British ‘business up and running’.
On a London Region level there is significant engagement with local government leaders including the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and the Lord Mayor of London, Alderman William Russell. As a member of the London Business Board, IoD London Region is also directly engaging with other business groups e.g. CBI, London Chamber of Commerce and the FSB. This is in addition to ‘London Councils’, which represents London’s 32 borough councils and the City of London. IoD London Region provides information to IoD HQ to help it shape the conversation with the British Government, ably led by our Director-General Jon Geldart. Please do continue to share you own business experiences and thoughts with me, your Branch Chairs or directly with IoD HQ: firstname.lastname@example.org
We are focused on encouraging Government to move quickly with details of how its policies will be implemented on the front line of business. I am all too aware that many companies need access to cash and they need it now. There is concern from members about their companies being asked to take on more debt and risk at a time of great uncertainty.
The recently launched IoD Coronavirus Hub is designed to provide you with access to the latest advice, information and resources you need to support your business. Do have a look at the webpages, which are often updated.
Our global community of directors is a huge asset, and we want you to get involved. If you would like to help your fellow members by sharing ideas or resources for the hub, email email@example.com
IoD London Region and its two strong branches, Central London and City of London, will soon begin a new online programme to replace the active physical informative events that were planned to run during the next few months. ‘Watch this space’.
At a recent London Business Board meeting we discussed how best to keep ‘business up and running’. Also, the need to look to the future and to plan for the recovery phase.
I am thankful to the input, assistance and support of the IoD London Regional Team (Alan Fitzwater and Jennifer Farley) and the talented business people who make up the two London Branch leadership groups and also to the many members who contact me.
COVID-19 has presented us with the most challenging of times and we must do all we can to keep our organisations functioning for the benefit of our stakeholders and wider society. IoD in London, across the UK and overseas is a strong and supportive community; you and I are part of it.
Chair, IoD London
