IoD North East (North) - The Story of BritishVolt

06 May 2021
IoD Yorkshire & North East Online, Online

Join this IoD North East breakfast briefing on 6th May, to learn the story of BritishVolt so far and what they have planned for their new site in Blyth, Northumberland.

The United Kingdom has a long history of innovation in advanced energy storage, starting with the invention of the original Lithium Cobalt Oxide battery at Oxford University, an invention that changed the way we live our connected lives and has started to change to way our populations move around, a change that will accelerate and grow as we need to protect the only place in the universe where we know life to exist. Our planet. Our home. (britishvolt.com)

In December 2020, BritishVolt announced the selection of a site in Blyth, Northumberland to build Britain’s first battery gigaplant. A milestone moment for the North East region, the announcement brings:
£2.6bn total investment, one of the UK’s largest ever industrial investments and the largest in the North East of England since the arrival of Nissan in 1984
3000 highly skilled jobs and up to 5000 more in the wider supply chain
A drive for the UK achieving Net Zero by 2050

The Blyth site was chosen by Britishvolt for excellent transport links and access to clean, renewable energy – the gigaplant set to be operational by the end of 2023.
