This week we will be covering the topic of 'sustainable leadership'. The world is facing global challenges, the scale of which is becoming increasingly apparent. These challenges are a direct threat to the sustainability of our businesses, but they also present a unique opportunity for resilience and sustainable development. Society’s relentless focus on economic growth over recent decades has led us to the position we’re in today, with macro challenges such as climate change, over-population, urbanisation, food insecurity and geopolitical uncertainty, presenting an existential threat to the way we live and work. The economic model we’ve always known must change, but with that change comes a unique chance for companies to pivot their business models and support the transition to a more sustainable economy.
Discussing the role that leaders play in this transformation journey, is Rob McKay, MD of executive search firm Sherrington Associates and Chair of IoD Cheshire. Rob is passionate about sustainability, in particular the importance of recruiting leaders with a sustainability mindset in order to achieve meaningful culture change. Rob is currently studying for a Certificate in Sustainability Leadership with the University of Cambridge and works with businesses large and small , helping them on their sustainability journey by recruiting the right leaders and coaching senior teams to embed sustainability values.
Also speaking is Ben Tolhurst, Head of Property and Asset Management for ‘JLL’ in the UK and a member of JLL’s UK Board. Ben’s background spans 27 years in the outsource sector and he has worked across a number of industries including government, energy and utilities, telco and property. He is passionate about addressing the climate emergency and has made some far reaching changes in his personal and professional life. He is also a Director of ‘Business Declares’, a not for profit organisation which acts as a critical friend to organisations who are seeking to change their business models and take positive steps to address this current environmental crisis.
