Getting the Best Out of Your Board

Overview
It is essential that the performance of any team is regularly reviewed and the board of directors is no exception. Poor performance by the board can have serious consequences, preventing the organisation from achieving its potential – ultimately, it could result in its failure. An effective board evaluation process is a key driver of improved performance at organisational, board and individual director level.

By the time the delegate has completed the session, they should be able to:

  1. Describe the key benefits of conducting a board evaluation
  1. Outline the main attributes of an effective board evaluation process

Improving Board Dynamics 

Overview
This workshop is designed to enable attendees to explore the dynamics exhibited at board level, with specific reference to board meetings. It will give delegates the opportunity to reflect on and share their own experiences, refine their approach to board meetings in order to gain confidence, and achieve more productive personal and business outcomes.

By the time the delegate has completed the session, they should be able to:
1. Distinguish board dynamics from the dynamics of other management teams
2. Recognise positive board meeting dynamics and support the development of positive dynamics on your own board

Speakers

IoD Course Leader
Jean Pousson

Business experience
Jean Pousson brings 20 years of management consultancy, training, facilitation and coaching experience to the table and is the lead course leader for Finance for Non-Financial Directors at the IoD. This follows a 15-year banking career with Barclays where he spent many years assessing risks of small to medium sized businesses and then larger corporations. Jean has also sat on many boards and has directed a number of change initiatives.

Professional credentials and training experience
Jean holds a business degree and a business diploma from the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa) and a few other business diplomas including one from the University of Warwick. Jean’s experience in dealing with numerous businesses, boards and executives over the years (both within the UK and internationally) makes him very well placed to assist directors with their developmental needs.

In his capacity as an IoD course leader, Jean has worked with organisations such as ACAS, Ministry of Defence, Standard Life, Serco, Lloyds Banking Group, Pizza Express, Fujitsu Siemens, Callaway Golf and Greene King plc. He has also worked with numerous small to medium-sized businesses across a wide variety of industries.
