IoD Scotland - Driving Eureka! Innovation Engineering for Leaders

03 Oct 2019
IoD Scotland, Edinburgh

The Workshop

This full day (9-5) workshop is for directors who want to know how to embed innovation capability into their organisation.

It is well understood that companies that innovate realise 200 to 300% increases in profit growth when they transform to a proactive innovation culture versus a reactive price driven strategy. However, research indicates that leaders believe innovation is risky, takes too long or they simply do not know how to innovate.

Innovation Engineering (IE) is a new field of study and practice that transforms innovation from a random gamble to a reliable system that delivers increased speed (up to 6x) and decreased risk (30 to 80%).

Workshop Style

A highly interactive workshop, participants experience some of the tools that could enable their teams to create, communicate and commercialise big ideas for new products, services or internal work systems faster and with less risk.

Focusing on the role of the leader and how to build innovation into a business plan to drive innovation success, participants will get to practice the Strategy Activation System. This ensures the innovation effort is focussed in an area that is both important and possibly urgent for the business.

They will learn how to write a motivating, clear mission that drives alignment through their organisation, such that employees can have the freedom (within a framework) to create ideas that will pull the organisation in the desired direction.

The workshop comprises short presentations followed by fast-paced group exercises to practice the innovation tools. Most importantly delegates will be encouraged to relate the concepts to their own situation and organisation. Each delegate will write two strategic innovation missions, one short term, one long term that are relevant to their business.

Speakers

Helen Potter, Co-founder and CEO, Potter Innovation

An engaging public speaker, trainer and coach whose top skills are Innovation Engineering, Product Development and Marketing.

Helen is a Graduate Chemist, Marketer and Innovation Engineer with 25 years’ experience in new product development and innovation.

In 2015, Helen founded Potter Innovation and now teaches leaders, managers and front-line workers how to turn ideas into reality, quickly and with less risk, by using a proven, data-driven, systems-based approach to innovation, known as Innovation Engineering (IE).

Helen discovered IE while she was working as the Innovation Manager for The Famous Grouse. IE was in its infancy and she had the chance to work with its founder Doug Hall to pilot many of the tools she now teaches. IE Systems enabled Helen to add over £12 million profit to The Famous Grouse, through innovation and portfolio expansion. She qualified as a Black Belt in IE soon after and, when her role was made redundant, Doug offered her a license to teach and bring IE to Europe.

For the last 3 years she has co-delivered an IE based Programme in Ireland to help SMEs grow through innovation. An external review found the Programme had returned £26 for every £1 invested. She is a trainer and mentor for Elevator’s Accelerator Programme, in her home town of Perth and also a Mentor for the HIE Mentoring Programme

Helen is currently the only female IE Black Belt outside North America and her mission is to demonstrate the anyone can learn how to innovate given the right training and tools.
