Overview for Practical Tips for becoming a NED 2019

Registration from 8.30am, course - 9am - 10.30am

Choosing to become a non-executive director (NED) could be prompted by a lifestyle change or a desire to use skills and knowledge gained in an executive environment. This could be fuelled by an ambition to do something worthy in the third sector or to support enterprising organisations. Or it could be the result of wanting to become involved in an organisation without taking on an executive role.

Whatever the rationale, it is essential to know how to access such roles – and how to make yourself the most desirable candidate in a marketplace where multiple applicants may be attempting to secure a prime role. This workshop will also explore the risks and responsibilities of the NED role, with recommendations on best practice for assessing contracts in an increasingly litigious environment.

Course Benefits

Identify what skills you have and need to hone for NED positions and how to distinguish yourself from the competition. Tips and advice provided within this session will enable you to write a compelling CV and construct a well prepared list of questions before you proceed.

Learning Objectives

By the time you have completed the session, you will be able to:

  • Identify what skills you have and need to hone for NED positions and how to distinguish yourselves from others.
  • Write a compelling CV and have a well prepared list of questions before you proceed.
  • Assess with greater knowledge the risks and responsibilities and as such be better placed to ensure you contract correctly.

Overview for Top 5 Things Every Director Should Know

Registration from 10.30am, course - 11am - 12.30pm

This practical session will explore the top five things every director must know, looking at the following questions:

  • Who is a director?
  • What do directors do?
  • What authority does a board have?
  • What personal liabilities do directors have?
  • What is a conflict of interest?

Course Benefits

This interactive taster session will enable you to distinguish the role of a director from the roles of other actors involved in the management and oversight of a business, and explore the link between a director’s duty towards the company and their potential personal liability.

Learning Objectives

By the time you have completed the session, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish the role of a director from those of the other actors involved in the management and oversight of an organisation.
  • Understand the link between a director’s duty towards the company and their potential personal liability as directors.

Overview for Step to the Top

Registration from 12.30am, course - 1.30pm to 3pm

Are you ready and willing to take the step to the board room? People often find themselves presented with the opportunity to become a board director on the basis of either being good at something else (e.g. perhaps at being a senior manager, an accountant or an engineer) or even by accident! Yet understanding what it means to be board-ready is essential to being a capable director.

This interactive workshop will help you to understand the duties and obligations that you will face as board directors. We will explore the personal characteristics and traits that you will need to develop in order to be an effective board member – delving into the critical differences between the role of the senior manager and the role of the director.

Course Benefits

The workshop is delivered by experienced board directors who, drawing on their personal experiences, can offer a practical insight into life as a board member of both large and small organisations. It will also signpost areas where you can get further support and training to help you make the leap to the step to the board room and develop the confidence to be a highly effective board member.

Learning Objectives

By the time you have completed the session, you will be able to:

  • Assess, with a clear understanding of the role, whether you are ready and/or willing to meet the challenge of becoming a board director.
  • Identify the gaps in your knowledge and expertise, and understand how you need to develop in order to become a confident and effective director.
