How to fit more learning into your 9-5

21 Sep 2018

As a director, your professional responsibilities extend beyond supporting your board and employees.

Staying up-to-date with the pace of change and updating your business knowledge accordingly by learning new skills, refreshing existing specialisms or gaining expertise in a role adjacent to your own can be tailored to fit your schedule, ensuring you can learn as you lead, without the need to step away from your daily duties.

Learn collaboratively

Scheduling a classroom based or interactive course or workshop into your calendar can be a refreshingly collaborative way to learn, and only requires you to switch off from your daily responsibilities for a few hours or days. These courses allow you to discuss solutions to business challenges with like-minded directors, and immediately put your learnings into practice once you get back to your desk. View our range of half-day to three-day courses here.

Digital directorship

Learning new skills needn’t be laborious. Get ahead by looking online – a number of organisations, including the IoD, offer digital content that can be accessed from your desk, commute or home office, allowing you to consume content as and when it suits your schedule. All of the learning offered by the IoD Digital Academy and app is devised by our expert course leaders and comes as standard when you book a course or take out IoD membership.

Top up your CPD

Bite-sized CPD content such as videos, quizzes, mock-examinations, webinars and more are available on the IoD Academy and app, and focus on a weekly theme, offering new learning every day, adding up to a worthwhile amount of CPD that can be easily slotted into your day. Complement this with free business fact-sheets from the IoD’s Information and Advisory Service and regular lunchtime webinars, and you’re able to dramatically develop your director skills without sacrificing your free time.

Fast-track your development

If you know you need to spend time on a particular skill, enroll on a fast-track residential course that combines all of that learning into five days, in a dedicated learning environment. Not only will you get to where you need to go faster, you’ll also forge meaningful professional relationships that may benefit you and your organisation in the future. Five days out of the office at once may seem daunting, but it eliminates the need for further lengthy absences by teaching you everything you need to know in one go.

The IoD offers a wide range of learning and development solutions based on your goals, role, and availability. View our brand new 2018/19 training calendar to continue your professional development today:
