The corporate governance section of the website covers aspects of regulation and corporate governance that affect directors and those on the governing bodies of other types of organisation. Specific policy issues include:
ecoDa and ICSA survey on board support in EU companies
ecoDa (The European Confederation of Directors’ Associations) and ICSA (The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators) are undertaking a survey of the means by which boards are supported in EU companies. The participation of IoD members in this survey is welcomed. All respondents will receive a summary of the study results. The survey can be accessed here.
IoD conference on NHS governance
The IoD is hosting - on the afternoon of 29 June 2009 - a landmark conference on NHS governance. The title of the conference is "The Governance of NHS Trusts: Getting the Balance Right", and is specifically intended for the leaders of NHS Trusts. It will explore the key issues involved in achieving an optimal blend of skills and experience on Trust boards. The conference will begin with keynote addresses from Dr. William Moyes (Chief Executive of Monitor) and Professor Aidan Halligan (UCLH). In addition, Miles Templeman - Director General of the Institute of Directors - will present the IoD’s perspective on the governance of NHS boards. Submissions to Walker and FRC Reviews
Following the IoD's Corporate Governance Summit at the end of May 2009, the IoD has now published its submissions to the Walker and FRC Reviews. These contain 7 specific policy proposals to improve the functioning of the UK corporate governance system in the wake of the financial and economic crisis.
Last call: Your views on the Combined Code
The Financial Reporting Council are seeking views from listed companies, directors, investors and other interested parties on the forthcoming review of the Combined Code. The consultation deadline is 29th May.
IoD Corporate Governance Summit - Does The Combined Code Need Reform?
The current financial crisis has brought existing corporate governance mechanisms into question. As a result, the government has announced major reviews of financial sector governance (the Walker review) and the Combined Code. To discuss the way forward, the IoD is hosting a Corporate Governance Summit on Monday 18th May 2009 (2-5pm). Leading speakers and the IoD leadership will evaluate the current UK corporate governance framework and consider potential reforms to the Combined Code. Read more>>
How effective are corporate Governance codes across the EU?
The European Confederation of Directors Association (EcoDa) - of which the IoD is a member - has won a tender for a major new research project with the European Commission. ecoDa is part of a consortium which will study the effectiveness of corporate Governance codes across the 27 EU member states. The European Confederation of Directors Associations (EcoDa) - of which the IoD is a member - have announced that KPMG and ICSA (the British Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators) have joined the confederation as new partners. Read more>>

The IoD was concerned that the then existing law dealing with manslaughter and work acted unfairly against smaller enterprises as compared with large organisations.
