IoD Proudly Announces the 1,000th Chartered Director:
Jim Arnold, Morrison Utility Services

It's a major landmark - the IoD's hugely popular director development programme has just appointed its 1000th Chartered Director.

Jim Arnold, MBA, a director at Morrison Utility Services, which works with utility companies helping them renew, refurbish and maintain their infrastructure and networks, was awarded Chartered Director status earlier this month.

His name can be added to a prestigious roll call spanning the last 10 years that includes entrepreneurs, non-executive and executive directors of FTSE and a range of organisational structures and sizes, CEOs from British, multinational and non-UK companies - who all have something in common - the achievement of demonstrating their directorial capabilities to the highest professional level. So, like many others before him, Jim's motivation in undertaking Chartered Director was the need to help him become a more effective director in leading Morrison Utility Services forward, aligned with his role as Executive Director of the company’s Central business division.

As well as clarifying his personal responsibilities as a company director, the training provided insights into the strategic planning and tactical awareness that underpins a successful business. But just as useful for Jim was the opportunity to meet with other directors on the courses and share their experiences - as he says, "to understand how they have dealt with the problems they have faced was both invaluable and encouraging."

We congratulate Jim and of all our other (now 1,004) Chartered Directors on achieving this tremendous career milestone, and leave Jim with the last word...

"Having been a Director of Morrison Utility Services for eight years and as a Chartered Engineer, MBA qualified with a successful track record in the industry of over 20 years, I was satisfied that I was suitably trained and experienced to deliver the operational side of my role. I wanted to hone my performance as a Director and Board member though so chose to undertake the IOD courses that culminated in gaining Chartered Director status. I was supported throughout this process by the business, which recognised the overall benefit this training and experience would bring to our Board."

Chartered Directors - Ambassadors in the Regions

The Messages of Needing to Improve Standards of Governance In, and Sustaining Successful, Organisations have never been voiced more loudly - the general public is demanding greater transparency, improvements in standards of governance and oversight - but are businesses and influencers really listening?

30 Chartered Directors (the IoD's Regional Ambassadors) have committed to work with IoD to find ways in which to increase the prominence of the Chartered Director qualification - through branches and regions - and nationally. This is a tremendous step forwards in raising profile and awareness and marks further the commitment of Chartered Directors to communicating WHY professionalism in the boardroom is so urgent to UK plc. Chartered Director is the IoD's flagship qualification which champions the Institute's key objective of creating more effective boards. Professionals and qualified practitioners are expected to go through a development and learning process to meet the demands of their functional specialisms - so why should there not be a requirement for professionally qualified directors in the boardroom - individuals who specialise in governance, who play a significant part in developing business strategy and policies and who guide the board in its decision taking and the adoption of best practice.

The IoD's Ambassadors, alongside their Regional Directors and Chairmen, have a vital part to play in supporting and facilitating profile raising and communications to a wider audience. The messages come from the top - that is, those who have been there, done the qualification and benefited from it.

As a first introduction, we present Paul Hooper-Keeley C Dir, a West Midlands Regional Ambassador, who relates why the qualification is so valuable to boards, organisations and individuals. Read more.
